Some Baby Boomers are ready for retirement while some are not. Some of them have lived the old way of working so hard and spending less money until they find themselves exhausted and possibly in poor health by the time (or shortly after) they retire. Some have gotten into great debt, possible illness' in the family and continue to work instead of retiring to enjoy life. It depends on what is happening in that particular person's life.
Baby Boomers are reluctant to take early retirement or, even retire when they can because they are not willing to give up possibly the powerful position they may be in at their place of employment, the money is good and they feel if they retire they will be shuffled into the two ugly words, 'retirement' and 'senior.' Most Baby Boomers don't see themselves as being old or acting old and most still have years left to keep working. They have energy, want to keep involved either in their jobs or engaged in some part of social life such as volunteering, going on vacations, etc.
Unfortunately, for most they are always watching how much money they are making or what they invest their money into rather than psychologically sitting down with their spouse to go over plans for their up-coming retirement at some point in their life and the out-come can be a shocking wake-up call. It's important for Baby Boomers who want to retire to think beforehand as to what they can tap into when they retire and it can be anything from golfing, going on fishing expeditions, vacationing, starting up a home-based business in which they are familiar with or to simply do the things they didn't know they were capable of doing such as oil painting, pottery, woodworking, writing a novel, etc. Some of the best works out there in these fields are often by Baby Boomers who have retired.
